Cell Phone Myths We Can Believe In

A good cell phone myth is a like a good campfire story. The more it takes on a life of its own, the better it can be in terms of scaring small children.

One such myth was spread through the blogosphere a few years ago and stated that there was a special code that someone could tap into their cell phone to unlock a special hidden surplus of battery power for special occasions. This special hidden power surplus would allow individuals hanging off of the side of a cliff with no cell phone juice left to make one final call before plunging to their demise. Or, conversely, itâ€™s really helpful at the mall.

Then there is the one that says that if you lock your keys in the car and you have a remote keyless entry system, you can unlock the car by having somebody beep your spare remote over a cell phone if you hold the phone near the car door. The science behind this one is sound, as most people with tinfoil hats know.

It seems that many people expect their cell phones to be able to do just about anything because, as we all know, small things that fit in our pockets are akin to miracle workers. Our cell phones, the little marvels of technology that they are, are capable of changing the tide of the world if we want them to. We just need to know the secret code.

Another myth reads if you use a cell phone while flying, the signal can interfere with the plane’s compass and navigation systems, possibly leading to a crash. Naturally, this explains why the stewardess asks passengers to turn off cell phones while flying.

One final popular myth is that cell phones will cause explosions and fires at gas stations if weâ€™re fuelling up and gabbing to our friends at the same time. I once had a gas station operator come out and approach me as though I had hostages, yelling at me to turn my cell phone off and stop talking while I was filling up. This myth is a complete hoax that was first perpetrated by Shell Oil in order to get consumers to listen to subliminal messages contained within the music they pumped out over the gas islands.
