Sharp has really been pouring it on in the world of developing cell phone accessories and technology. They recently announced the development of the world’s first waterproof solar-powered cell phone, upping the ante on the other tech companies by improving technology every step of the way. Now it looks like they’ve developed an ultra-thin solar panel for cell phones that could have you losing sight of it pretty easily.
The LROCGO2 Solar Module measures just 0.8 mm thick. Yes, you read that right. It’s about the thickness of eight human hairs, give or take.
It should be noted that the polycrystalline solar cells only provide 300 mW of power, so it might be a problem when it comes to longevity, but I think we can expect Sharp to come up with a solution for this issue in the next few months as well. The device won’t be expected to replace traditional battery supply just yet, of course, but Sharp seems to think we could be well on our way.
For the time being, the LROCGO2 Solar Module operates like a supplementary power supply. The panel will help out when batteries have run out and should be able to offer a pretty significant boost for those times you find yourself without a charger and in real need of some juice for your phone.
There is no word on a North American release date for the LROCG02 Solar Module just yet, although the product is really big in Japan.
